“Using studio brooms to imitate rolling waves and tilting the canvas as the paint is drying to replicate a receding wave – I am pleased with the movement obtained in this work. I wanted to capture the subtle changes of the colour on the coast of Cornwall, the blur of the line between where the sky meets the sea , the horizon.
With most of my work I struggle to be spontaneous and to use as few gestures as I can get away with. The broom was a move of frustration, one which worked, this time, in my favour. The colours of the seaweeds and shells on the cornish rocks, and the fact that the colours of the sea are relatively muted, allowed me to exaggerate the colours.” Michael Sole
